All those “new” releases that are actually just different dial colors are fun to follow and sometimes actually exciting. But now – especially now – when the market is slower and complaints about price hikes are taken for granted, like an Oscar nomination for Coppola or Nolan (except Megalopolis – please no), there’s something exceedingly appealing about one of the longest-running divers ever.

Especially when we’ve already done the Reference Points on a particular model, it can feel like we’ve said everything there is to say.

“Welp, good job guys, we did it – we wrote 10,505 words on the Submariner – try and top that,” the very title Reference Points taunts. But there’s still plenty to say about the 5513.

As Reference Points reminds us, Rolex produced the 5513 from 1962 through 1989, which means it lived a life longer than most domesticated cats. Like a house cat, any particular 5513 isn’t exactly rare or special (just kidding, Marmalade, I love you, my sweet tortie), but as the 5513 fades further in the rearview, it’s harder to find them in good condition. More than rarity, the condition is what can set a vintage Sub apart.

Submariner 5512 Vs. 5513

Rolex introduced the Submariner 5513 in 1962, three years after the Submariner 5512. The main difference is on the inside, as the 5513 does not feature a COSC-certified chronometer movement. After its first few years of production, the 5512 always used a chronometer-certified movement. This was signified by the “Superlative Chronometer” text on the dial at six o’clock. The 5512 carried a premium, but the high quality Rolex replica watches are the same otherwise. As the first Submariner references with crown guards, they laid the groundwork for the next 60 years of the model. While materials have changed, cases have gotten beefier and bracelets sturdier; a 5512 or 5513 is, basically, the same as a modern 124060.

“For me, the 5513 is among the ultimate in sports Rolex,” Fratello editor Mike Stockton added. “Despite the fact that I’ve always been partial to the 5512 because my dad wore a battered ’60s example for diving, I deeply respect the 5513.” This illustrates the larger point: Any preference between the two references is mostly personal.

Two-liner vs. four-liner – it’s a debate nearly as old as the detent escapement. Instead of going in-depth on each of the dial types, I found one collector to explain why one specific dial type – gilt, matte, or glossy – is their favorite.

Gilt Dials

Like many brands, Rolex produced gilt dials for its sports Swiss movements replica Rolex watches in the early ’60s, including Subs. These dials were produced by a time-intensive process that exposed the underlying metal of the dial blank. Since the technique exposes the blank brass underneath the dial’s face, this often results in golden text and markers. A lacquer is also added, giving the black dial a “glossy,” shiny finish.

But they’re also fragile and many experienced cracking and peeling from heat and moisture exposure.” Because of this, finding a gilt Sub in collectible condition is a real treat.

These gilt dials truly feel like old, vintage fake Rolex watches online site from another era. It’s hard to find anything made since that compares with that deep, glossy black.

Matte Dials

By the late ’60s, Rolex started transitioning from gilt to matte dials.

In his excellent in-depth article on the best quality replica Rolex Submariner 5512 watches, Dunne explained that the pad printing (or tampography) process was actually invented for watch dials by a German industrialist, developing a process to print matte dials at scale by 1968. It’s no wonder we saw brands like Rolex transition from those pesky gilt dials to matte dials in the late ’60s. “The fact that Rolex was making this antiquated watch with a matte dial and gorgeous domed Tropic crystal well into the ’80s strikes me as anachronistic. I love the huge, warm tritium lume plots under the crystal… earlier pieces are fine but more lume is better to me.”

Stockton is referring to the “Maxi” dials that Rolex began producing in the late ’70s, so called because of the larger lume plots that can make the top fake Rolex watches feel even bigger. These mega lume plots can also make the watch feel a bit bigger on wrist.

He’s right – getting a full view of all those lume plots through that old, domed plastic crystal just feels right. Dunne agreed.

“There’s nothing like a gilt Rolex dial,” Dunne conceded. “But should a matte dial always be less desirable than gilt? No way.” The crisp print and textured surface give matte dials a character all their own. Especially if you take into account the premium that gilt can command over matte, there’s a lot of value in matte dials.

A matte Submariner is, in many ways, the Submariner. It’s not flashy or rare or ostentatious, it’s just a great vintage dive watch, and that’s exactly why Rolex made these matte 5513s for almost two decades.

Glossy Dials (With White Gold Surrounds)

Finally, in the mid-’80s, Rolex transitioned to glossy dials featuring lume plots with white gold surrounds around the lume plots. The excess of the ’80s had arrived in full force, and not even the reliable old Submariner could resist it. Even the lume plots have gone from a functional feature to a statement.

I’d often thought these more modern glossy dials were a bit too luxurious – in the worst sense of that word – but especially combined with the same old 5513 case, I’ve grown to tolerate the look of this last generation of 5513s. The last vestiges of its tool-watch origins are hanging on like George Clooney to his last few black hairs. Still there and always handsome, but soon enough, the first five-digit models would make the Sub mostly modern.

I might prefer a matte dial, but there’s a modern appeal to these late glossy dials, not to mention they offer some value. They might not feel quite like a “true” vintage watch yet, whatever that means, but soon enough, they will.

The Oyster Bracelet

A Rolex Submariner, old or new, is typically delivered on an Oyster bracelet – it’s so familiar it feels like part of the watch. We don’t often discuss the wearability and differences of these vintage Oyster bracelets, so let’s take a closer at the range of bracelet types you can find on the 5513. In general, there are three generations of bracelets for Subs:

Early ’60s: Rivet (7206, 6636, C&I made-in-USA bracelets, among other domestic-market bracelets)
Late ’60s–’70s: Folded link (9315)
1980s: Solid link (93150)

Renowned Swiss bracelet maker Gay Freres was the primary supplier of bracelets, which Rolex would go on to wholly acquire in 1998. Early “Big Logo” rivet bracelets that also came on other big-time Rolex references and were named after the large logo stamped on the clasp command a premium.

Bracelet codes are stamped inside the clasp. In these early years, a batch and production year were also stamped on the clasp. We can debate which bracelet feels best on wrist, and I certainly have. As mentioned, the folded link has a Goldilocks appeal for me, though there’s also a practicality to wearing your vintage tool watch on a sturdy solid-link bracelet (FlipLock and all). There’s a bit less vintage appeal, and it’ll feel chunkier on the wrist, but you also won’t sweat while walking through every single door jamb. For me, a matte 5513 on a solid link bracelet strikes that balance between vintage charm and wearability that makes vintage Rolex appealing. That’s more about wearability than collectability, but of any vintage 1:1 quality Rolex replica watches, it feels like we should wear our vintage Subs.

By the way, that’s one of the reasons it can be so fun to search for vintage Submariners – they vary so much in condition because people just wore their damn watches.

Beyond personal preferences for a particular type of Oyster bracelet, it’s important to find a bracelet that matches your watch. For example, if you’re wearing an early gilt dial, that should pair with a rivet bracelet. For me, it just looks weird and put together on a solid-link bracelet – save those later bracelets for late matte or glossy dials. And if you’re a dealer, offer your Sub stock on a correct bracelet!

The Vintage Submariner Case

I wanted to talk more about the Submariner case, but this has already gone longer than expected, so I’ll leave you with just a couple of thoughts:

First, while it’s important to look for a 5513 case that still has its original lines and edges, these Oyster cases are chunky, built to last, and can stand a sympathetic polish or two. More than a Daytona or Explorer, for example. Obviously, sharper cases deserve a premium, but a polish or two doesn’t need to be an automatic pass.

Second, a lot of the magic is in the lug bevels. There are other details to look for, too – e.g., the crown guards and knurling on the bezel ring – but a lot of the beauty of a Sub’s case is in the bevels. Look at even a few vintage Submariner cases, and you’ll see how much they can vary. Some of this is polishing, but some of it’s just how they were made. The original bevels are big and fat on early examples but tend to get thinner in later years. Much of the trick is finding a case that seems to “make sense” with the rest of the China 2024 Rolex fake watches. A crispy case with a dial that looks like it’s been through a couple of tours? The Submariner Market And Collecting The 5513

“It’s a really good time to be a person who wants to own a vintage Sub,” Dunne said. Everyone I talked to agreed. The vintage Rolex market has been down for a few years, but thinking that the vintage Submariner market is going to completely collapse would be like betting against Microsoft. The Submariner is the ultimate blue chip in watch collecting.

The data seems to agree, too. The Subdial/Bloomberg Watch Index says the average price of a 5513 is down 11.8 percent over the past 12 months, with trade volume down 29 percent.

As we’ve been discussing, there’s a ton of variation in this one reference, so one average doesn’t capture the whole picture. EveryWatch did an analysis for this article and found that, over the past 3 years, dial types impacted the average sale price as follows:

Underline (gilt): +$35,600
Matte dial: +$1,400
Glossy (WGS) dial: -$1,200

In other words, a matte dial sold for an average of $1,400 more than the overall 5513 average. Given that a matte 5513 is basically an “average” 5513 – it had the longest production run of the three dial types – this seems to make some sense. This spread, which doesn’t even get to the special Explorer dials and MilSubs, begins to illustrate how you could spend a lifetime collecting vintage Subs or just the 5513 and never get bored.

However, the vintage Rolex market has been slower over the past few years. The general consensus is that “it’s not 2018” anymore when every big-time collector felt they needed an early gilt Sub. And that’s just fine. Rolex made the 5513 for almost 30 years, and people have been buying them for the last 30 years. It’ll still be the quintessential diver in another 30 years.

The total market value of all perfect Rolex Submariner replica watches ever made is almost US$50 billion (RM223.4 billion), based on analysis of the first-ever release of production data by the Swiss watchmaker.

Rolex has a vested interest in the second-hand market, as it recently started selling used models through its certified pre-owned programme.

Still, just 1% of all its best quality Rolex copy watches made are for sale at any given time, according to Subdial and other major sellers. Even though models including the Daytona chronograph have captured more attention with recent price increases, for collectors and dealers like Wind, the Submariner stands out.

“It’s the watch so many people choose to buy with their first bonus check,” Wind said.

This week, we jump into the world of the vintage models that came before the iconic watches we know today. Some have the same cases and dials with one simple difference: the famous names we know today were not printed on the dials. Others, however, are notably different perfect Rolex replica watches that preceded the famous Rolex icons that would follow. It’s time to discover more about these Rolex “pre-icon” models.

Before we get into our list, it’s important to clarify that some of the watches featured here are indeed considered part of the lineage of Rolex’s most famous watches. The next watch is my favorite one on this list. It’s even one of my top three vintage Rolex replica watches store overall, sitting alongside the Explorer II ref. 1655 and the GMT-Master ref. 1675. Two years ago, I wrote a love letter about the Rolex Chronograph ref. 6238 “Pre-Daytona.” In it, I detailed why I love the watch so much. Over the six years that the 6238 was in production, Rolex supposedly made 3,500 pieces in stainless steel. Additionally, the brand produced a small number in yellow gold and rose gold. Where it gets a little more complicated is the number of dial variations. Rolex released no fewer than 14 executions. The steel models came with silver, gray, and black dials, each with a distinct vibe. My favorites are the gray- and black-dial versions, but they are also the hardest to find. The silver-dial version is by far the easiest to track down.

Rolex first equipped these best quality fake Rolex watches with the legendary Valjoux 72. Later versions, however, housed the updated Valjoux 722. The iconic chronograph movement also powered the famous Daytona that followed and chronographs from Breitling, Heuer, Longines, Gallet, and Universal Genève.

Regarding asking prices, expect them to start at €35K and increase to €200K for a steel version with a black dial or one of the gold models. It’s a lot of money, but that will get you a legendary watch.

Inside the case, you will find the Valjoux caliber 722. This manual-winding column-wheel chronograph operated at 18,000vph and had 17 jewels and a 48-hour power reserve. The first-generation Daytona is one of the industry’s icons, and you will see that reflected in the prices. In the mid-1970s—1972 by some collectors’ estimation, slightly later by others—the folded-link Oyster bracelets had been replaced by the first solid-link versions, which constitute the most robust (and still-used) of Rolex’s sport bracelet designs. Adding a zero to the previous generation reference numbers results in the reference 78360, which featured a folding clasp.

Fourth Generation Oyster Bracelet with Solid End Links (2000-2010)

With Watches and Wonders as well as the spring auction season behind us, the watch market is calm and steady. And, generally speaking, 2024 is turning out to be a relatively stable year for perfect UK Rolex replica watches. Prices are down, and supply is up—and that spells “buyer’s market.” This is especially true of pre-owned Rolex.

As collectors, the problem with market-wide predictions and recommendations—and even simple observations—is that individual brands, models and even specific references can be moving in directions at odds with the general market. In May this year I noted that pre-owned Cartier and Breitling had dropped in value during Q1, and yet the Cartier Panthère rose 19.51 percent, while the Breitling Navitimer went up 18 percent. So, when people ask if it’s a good time to buy a watch, I always answer, “Depends on which watch.” We offer this caveat for Rolex, as well, and will use data to home in on the good deals.

Despite a few notable anomalies (which you’ll find below), right now is an excellent time to buy vintage, neo-vintage and, especially, recent-model pre-owned AAA 2024 fake Rolex sports watches. Using Chrono 24’s ChronoPulse watch market index to gain better insight, we are seeing anecdotal remarks from across the wwatch world confirmed by data. Even in the past month alone (August of 2024), the prices have continued on a steady fall.

We spoke with Eric Wind of Wind Vintage to get his feel for the current Rolex market, and he told us that, “People don’t realize they can suddenly go buy modern top Rolex replica watches for less than it would cost at retail. There was all this hysteria, and so that surprises people. Especially Subs and Sea-Dwellers, those are way down.”

If you know which references to look for and how to assess condition, you can walk away with a Rolex Submariner, GMT-Master, Explorer II, or Oyster Perpetual 41 for far less than you would have just a couple years ago—in some cases, thousands less. And if you’re thinking of the purchase as an investment, you would do well to consider neo-vintage Rolex right now.

A fair warning from Eric Wind: “Even a very recent Rolex needs to be checked out before you go swimming with it. People assume that because it’s a modern Rolex, it’ll be waterproof, but you need to get it checked out.” His point is well taken, as rubber gaskets can wear out, and you can’t be sure whether the previous owner didn’t overwork the crown, or whether the best Rolex copy watches was recently serviced.

With warnings and caveats in place, let’s get into this buyer’s market.

Neo-Vintage and Current Model Subs

The five-digit 1:1 wholesale Rolex Submariner replica watches (1980-2000s) are very tasty in style due to the aluminum bezel inserts—and if they’re dated before 1984-ish, you’ll get matte dials with painted markers for full-on vintage vibes (post-1983 Subs feature gloss dials with white gold marker surrounds). To get a sense of where the five-digit Subs are headed, ChronoPulse reports that the Submariner reference 16610 (which is post-1984 with glossy dial, gold indices, and caliber 3135) is down by about 10 percent over the last 12 months, putting many examples well below $10,000. We’ve even seen a few decent examples below $8,000. You can expect to pay more for 16800s with matte dials, however, as they’re more “vintage.”

If you’re interested in the modern six-digit references with the Cerachom (ceramic) bezel inserts and updated movements, you’ll be pleased to learn that the cheap fake Rolex Submariner reference 124060 watches (the current no-date version released in 2020) is down by abour 5 percent percent over the past year, according to the ChronoPulse Index. If you want a date complication, the current reference 126610LN is down by four percent. This sets these desirable models right around retail prices (plus tax). This is a common benchmark for used pricing. The 126610 with date can cost right around $13,000 with box and papers as of this writing, and the 124060 no-date model can be had for just over $10,000.

Maybe scoring a sub at retail isn’t quite the great deal is seemed just a few years ago.

Surprisingly, the all-green “Hulk” reference 116610 of 2010—which was once downright scarce a few years ago—just shot down, as well. During the pandemic you’d be paying over $26,000 for a Hulk, but now they’re available for below $17,000. Shocking, really.

True Vintage Submariners

Though ChronoPulse doesn’t report data on the four-digit references (World War II to ~1979), we’d recommend looking at the revered 1680 Swiss movements Rolex Submariner replica watches with date, which Rolex produced with “SUBMARINER” written in either red text or white. The revered “Red Sub” always costs more. We’re seeing good looking 1680s with white text down around $14,000, while Red Subs closer to $20,000 and up. A caveat: Vintage prices tend to operate on their own calculus, as trends (and thus supply), as well as condition, drive that market in less predictable ways. In short, you’ll see a very wide variation in pricing, though the trend is generally down.

The Five-Digit GMT-Master II Is Looking Reasonable (Again)

The coveted China top fake Rolex GMT-Master II models are also down, but the changes are less drastic than with the Subs. Discontinued models like the steel reference 126710LN “Pepsi” on Jubilee bracelet appears to be holdin steady, but five-digit reference 16710 Pepsi GMT-Master II models are down by over seven percent over past 12 months. This means you’ll pay under $10,000 for a nice GMT Master II. That’s way down, and given the rising prices of Rolex super clone watches for sale generally, not a horrible deal at all.

Condition of five-digit GMT-Master II references is especially influential on pricing. The fading of the bezel insert tends to send some collectors head-over-heals if it’s especially ghosted (sun bleached), while excessive case polishing (which was common in the five-digit era) will drive prices downward. All this to say, there’s a wide range of pricing for GMT-Master II references, but if you’re looking for a very cool watch to wear every day, a relatively clean one can be had under $10,000.

Explorer II Prices Falling

If there’s a collector’s Rolex, it is the 40 mm Swiss made replica Rolex Explorer II 16570 watches, especially with a “polar” (white) dial. These have always been the less desirable GMTs from Rolex, but they’re very popular with watch enthusiasts, partly because they were reasonably priced. As it turns out, the 40 mm 16570 with a black dial is down over the past year, but fluctuates a bit more than other models (likely due to recent journalism on the 16570, as well as growing demand for smaller watches). Meanwhile the six-digit 42 mm 226570 is also significantly in the same time period.

You can always expect to pay more for white dials than black ones with Explorer II references, but the prices are really down: Around $8000 for a black dial, and as little as $8500 for a white dial as of this writing. As always, condition, service history and box and papers will be important.

Big Datejusts Down, Little Datejusts Up

A 41 mm Rolex Datejust copy watches UK for sale used to be a really big deal to own, but tastes have decidedly changed toward smaller watches, and even toward small dress watches. We are fairly confident that these trends have driven prices for the 41 mm Datejust down a full 14 percent over the past year, which really is a stunning result. Meanwhile, the 36 mm Datejust is up by 55 over 12 months, and continues to spike. Who would have guessed this?

The Datejust’s impressive performance may also indicate the growing preference for dressier Rolex replica watches shop. Based on anecdotal reports from fellow collectors, that assessment feels right. (Note: ChronoPulse doesn’t offer data on the 36 mm Oyster Perpetuals.)

The Daytona, Milgauss, and More

I think the picture we’re painting, supported by data, is relatively clear: This is a Rolex buyer’s market, with some exceptions for specific models.

For example, steel best quality Rolex Daytona fake watches remain expensive overall (roughly double what you’d pay at retail for a Daytona), and yet the Rolex Daytona 116500LN from 2016 is down over 12 percent over since this time last year. Even the discontinued Milgauss 116400GV is down four percent in that time. Daytonas and discontinued models going down is a clear sign of the buyer’s market.

As with buying any pre-owned watch: Do your research, find a great example, and take note of whether you’re looking at an anomaly that shot up in price, or if you’re getting a good deal because that model’s price has fallen.
